AZTREO 1GM INJECTION contains Aztreonam which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to manage serious bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis and cystitis and asymptomatic bacteriuria), lower respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia and bronchitis), bacteraemia/septicemia, bone and joint infections, skin and skin-structure infections (including those associated with postoperative wounds, ulcers and burns).

AZTREO 1GM INJECTION is also used to manage intra-abdominal infections (including peritonitis), gynaecologic infections (including pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis and pelvic cellulitis) and gonorrhoea (acute uncomplicated urogenital or anorectal infections).

AZTREO 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver, kidney disease and fits. AZTREO 1GM INJECTION is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless it is considered clearly necessary. It is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

AZTREO 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in new born older than one week and in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before receiving AZTREO 1GM INJECTION.

The most common side effects of receiving AZTREO 1GM INJECTION are cough, nasal congestion, wheezing, throat pain, fever, chest discomfort abdominal pain and vomiting. Contact your doctor if any of the symptoms worsen.


USES OF AZTREO 1GM INJECTION

To manage serious bacterial infections such as:

  • urinary tract infections
  • lower respiratory tract infections
  • bacteraemia/septicemia
  • bone and joint infections
  • skin and skin-structure infections
  • intra-abdominal infections
  • gynaecologic infections
  • gonorrhoea

HOW AZTREO 1GM INJECTION WORKS

AZTREO 1GM INJECTION is a bactericidal agent that works by managing the formation of the protective covering of the bacteria (bacterial cell wall) which is essential for the survival of bacteria. Thus, helps to manage bacterial infection effectively.


DIRECTIONS FOR USE

AZTREO 1GM INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into a vein as an intravenous injection/infusion or into the muscle as intramuscular injection. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight and disease condition.


SIDE EFFECTS OF AZTREO 1GM INJECTION

COMMON

  • cough, nasal congestion, wheezing
  • throat pain, fever
  • chest discomfort
  • abdominal pain, vomiting

UNCOMMON

  • discomfort and swelling at intramuscular injection site
  • nausea, diarrhea
  • rash

RARE

  • dizziness, ringing in the ears
  • double vision
  • bleeding of the stomach
  • painful or swollen colon or liver
  • bad breath
  • weakness
  • yellowing of the skin
  • thrush or other vaginal irritation
  • fits
  • headache
  • wheezing
  • breast tenderness
  • sneezing
  • tingling/numbness
  • difficulty sleeping
  • change in heartbeat, fall in blood pressure
  • confusion
  • bleeding, spontaneous bruising
  • muscle pain
  • general discomfort
  • increase in time taken for a cut to stop bleeding 
  • phlebitis or thrombophlebitis (inflammation or swelling of vein at the intra venous injection site)

Stop receiving AZTREO 1GM INJECTION and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • allergic reactions (signs include swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat with difficulty in swallowing or breathing)
  • serious bowel inflammation (signs include severe, persistent or bloody diarrhea associated with stomach pain or fever)


HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea and vomiting:

Try to receive this medicine with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy food. Contact your doctor if your nausea and vomiting did not improve.

Diarrhea:

Drink lots of fluids, such as water or fruit juices to keep yourself hydrated. Do not take any medicine on your own for managing diarrhoea. Contact your doctor if your diarrhoea did not improve.

Stomach discomfort:

Try to have smaller meals but take frequently. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. Do not self-manage and contact your doctor if the stomach pain did not improve.

Headache:  

Rest and relax. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or ORS (Oral Rehydrating Solution) and apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if necessary. Contact your doctor if your headache did not improve.

Dizziness:

Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operate any machines while you are feeling dizzy. Contact your doctor if your dizziness did not improve.


WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

AZTREO 1GM INJECTION is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless it is considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before receiving AZTREO 1GM INJECTION.

BREASTFEEDING

AZTREO 1GM INJECTION is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Consult your doctor before receiving AZTREO 1GM INJECTION.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate any machines if you have unexplained confusion, altered mental function, seizure, movement disorders after receiving AZTREO 1GM INJECTION.

KIDNEY

AZTREO 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease and may require dose adjustment. Consult your doctor before receiving AZTREO 1GM INJECTION.

LIVER

AZTREO 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver disease such as alcoholic cirrhosis and may require dose adjustment. Consult your doctor before receiving AZTREO 1GM INJECTION.

ALLERGY

Do not receive AZTREO 1GM INJECTION if you are allergic to Aztreonam or L-arginine or any other ingredients of this medicine.

OTHERS

Before receiving AZTREO 1GM INJECTION, inform your doctor if you:

  • have ever had an allergic reaction to any antibiotics 
  • have diarrhoea or usually get diarrhoea when you take antibiotics or have ever suffered from problems with your stomach or intestines
  • have blood disorders Ex. pancytopenia (severe reduction in blood cells causing weakness, bruising or prone to infections)
  • have skin disorders, including serious illness with blistering of the skin (toxic epidermal necrolysis) 
  • are going to have coomb’s test (a test for some blood problems)
  • have fits

Use in pediatrics:

AZTREO 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in new born older than one week. There is no safety information on use of this medicine in new born less than one week old. Consult your doctor before receiving AZTREO 1GM INJECTION.

Use in geriatrics:

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before receiving AZTREO 1GM INJECTION, inform your doctor if you are receiving any of the following medicine:

  • probenecid (used to manage gout)
  • anticoagulants (medicines used to thin blood) Ex. warfarin
  • furosemide (used to remove extra fluid in the body (edema))
  • opioids (medicines used to manage severe pain) Ex. tramadol
  • diphenoxylate with atropine (a combination medicine used to manage diarrhea)
  • aminoglycosides (medicines used to manage bacterial infections) Ex. amikacin, kanamycin

Overdosage:

AZTREO 1GM INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse if you experience unexplained confusion, altered mental function, coma, seizure, movement disorders or weakness.
